CreativityChildren are naturally creative. Unusual and curious objects arouse children’s interest and imaginations. Give them a box of shells and driftwood with no instruction and observe just how absorbed they become in what they are creating. The process of creating is just as important to them as the end product. Art and craft in our Montessori classroom is integrated into each area of the Montessori curriculum. Children love to be present in the process of creation and we aim to expose our children to many art and craft experiences.
All Dads or Grand Fathers that drop off on Friday 5th September get a complementary coffee. Its Father Day on Sunday 7th and we like to wish all the Dads, Grand Father’s and Care Givers a lovely day. The coffee van will be here from 8.15am
Re BrandingThroughout this past year Mel and Doc have been working on the new face of Abacus. Working along side Marketing and Web design professionals has definitely been an interesting process of which we have both learnt from. Thank you to the Whᾱnau within our community for your feedback. The new signage has been a hot topic, the pea in the pod is Manny McPea, he is our mascot and the children love Mel’s car design.
NurseryIts been a busy July and August. New babies starting and our older children transitioning from Nursery to the Preschool.
The children in the Nursery have been really busy creating their master pieces for the “Art Expo”. Thank you to all families for supporting our “Under the Sea” fund raiser, such a wonderful evening to meet and catch up with Abacus Whanau.
With money raised from the Entertainment book and Art Expo we have bought new Montessori equipment, farms sets, dolls toys, puzzles, a car port and many practical life objects for activities.
We have had a lovely time exploring our animal topic with regular visits to see the Woolston School pig, “Trooper” who recoginises us maybe because of the food scraps we feed him!!!!
Our current emerging topic is learning through role play and imagination. This fits well with our new resources.
September Mat Time Focus Cards are Colour Yellow, Shape Triangle, Letter T. Children love to share at our mat times so please feel free to bring in any objects relating to these cards.
PreschoolWith our lovely two year olds we are currently focusing on the Montessori foundation Skills, pouring, spooning and tonging using a variety of exciting materials and new resources. We have changed rooms with The Pod children in which all involved are excited by something different. New Mirrors are proving popular.
Within the main classroom our children have been enjoying new equipment and resources on the shelves that were funded by the money raised from the wonderful Art Expo. THANKS for all your support. It was such a wonderful evening to view what your children have been involved in and a great time to meet and catch up with other families within our community. The Magnetic activity, the sink or float activity and the Land, Air and Water activities are some of the activities the children are amazed by.
We have been focusing on the letter of the week, encouraging the tamariki to bring in some objects from home to share with each other during mat time. Can we please leave toys at home and try and focus on different practical life objects
within our home environment to share.
Practicing writing the letter of the week is a major focus, also the phonetic sounds. Working with pencil grip and scissor skills making creative pictures to strengthen our fine motor skills.
The Pod / Extended DayThe older children are enjoying a larger space where they can lay out their extension activities. Currently focusing on creativity and art history which has been complimented by a trip to the botanic gardens. Self portraits are a wonderfully creative way for the children to express themselves. The children’s self portraits are in their profile books.
