Play grounds are places where children can take off and flourish. We are really proud of what’s been achieved in our back yard and thank you all for your help and patience. Its wonderful to see the children run, jump, hide, make a mess, whistle, shout and explore the natural world.
Biology is the study of living things and part of the Montessori Curriculum. We are currently working on the gardens at Abacus with the children enjoying planting winter vegetables and herbs. We have been also recycling gumboots and potting flowers in them. Any old boots would be greatly appreciated. This planting activity is to help introduce the wonders of nature. We are also collecting egg cartons, small fizzy drink bottles and little socks. These are all being used for our Under the Sea Art Expo which is on July 31st. Thank you.
Thank you to the Whᾱnau who attended our Healthy Food and Active Movement Evening. Adele from the Heart Foundation had some yummy and different lunch box and meal ideas. For more information heartfoundation.org.nz
On a bright Autumn day, the Nursery children set off on a nice short walk to the Pet Shop to choose our new pet fish for our classroom. It was very exciting as there were many different fish to choose from. The children really enjoyed seeing the kittens and puppies also. We would like to welcome Bubbles and Freckles to our Nursery. The Discovery Centre trip was a huge success. The children loved setting out on our adventure travelling by the local bus. There was so much to look at and explore in the Discovery Centre at the Museum. Children’s sheer joy of learning extends to our wider community.
Welcome back to the Blair – Johnson family so lovely to have Aoife in the Nursery and Welcome to Vincent’s brother Ethan.

Preschool NewsCaring for living things is a basic element of the Montessori Curriculum. We at Abacus are very keen for children to be in touch with the natural environment. We acknowledge that within the confines of a classroom and the Montessori Materials are by no means the whole scope of Montessori Education. The preschool garden has begun to get underway. Its awesome to see the childrens natural curiosity being stimulated through the discovery of planting vegetables!
This month in The Pod we have been focusing on the letter of the week and the tamariki have been bringing in some objects from home to share with each other during mat time. Some very creative tamiriki and whᾱnau have come up with new objects each week., thank you. We have been practicing phonetic sounds and practicing writing these letters strengthening our fine motor skills and preparing us for school.
On Monday 9th June we are organising a trip to Arion Farm Education Park. This park is a place where children can see, touch and feed a variety of farm animals. They learn about where animals come from and how they live. Children learn by doing and in this environment they get plenty of opportunity to do. This experience will captivate the children’s curiosity and indirectly foster a greater need to learn more about our place in this world.
To make this trip possible we need parent help as the ratio is 1 adult to every 2 children. The cost of this trip is $10 each child. Please could we have payment in by 6th June to make this educational and fun trip happen.
